What do you want from God?
If God asked you today, what do you want me to do for you? What would you answer? Marriage? A baby? A new job? One job instead of two? Extra help in your home so you can get more rest? What would it be?
Throughout scripture, God asks his faithful, what do you desire? God’s prophets ask this question asks this same question, what shall I do for you? Jesus also asks on several occasions. The repetition of this question gives me pause because it points to a God who isn’t just concerned about our daily needs, but about what will delight us.
In 2 Kings 4:13 Elisha asks the Shunammite woman, “what can I do for you?” She responded by saying she dwelled among her own people, meaning all her needs were met. So he thought about it and asked his assistant to help him figure out what he could do to repay her for her kindness towards him. His assistant pointed out something that he noticed in the Shunammite woman’s life and Elisha knew exactly how to bless her. He called for her and made this prophesy: “About this time next year you shall embrace a son” (verse 15). And her response is beautiful “No, my lord, Man of God, do not lie to your maidservant!”
This exclamation betrays a deep desire that she was afraid to give voice to.
Is there something that you wish for that you are afraid to speak out? Is there something that would make you break out into an unabashed happy dance if it came to pass? What is it?
What would you ask for if He asked you?
Can I tell you something? God wants you to have your heart’s desires, in abundance.
So go ahead.
Whisper it to your Heavenly Father.
He wants to know.
